Body Butter

Body butter is such a fun, luxurious way to replace store bought lotions and creams that may contain chemicals, parabens, artificial colors/perfumes and other potentially toxic additives. Rather than coating my skin, I love that my skin just soaks up all the goodness in my DIY body butter!

  • 1 cup organic white shea butter
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup almond oil (or another liquid oil)
  • 1 t. vitamin E oil
  • 20 drops of Essential Oil – play with the amount you want to add, you can add more or less depending on how strong you want the scent

Melt the shea butter and coconut oil in the top of a double boiler. (Or I just use a glass measuring cup in a stainless steal pot.) Remove from heat and let cool for 30 minutes. Stir in almond oil and essential oils of your choosing. Place oil mixture in freezer to chill. Wait until oils start to partially solidify then whip until a butter-like consistency. I usually whip in a stand mixer for at least 15 minutes. The longer you whip, the fluffier your butter will be. {The chilling step is crucial! If it doesn’t chill enough, it won’t whip up fluffy.}

Have fun trying out any combination of essential oils that smells good to you! I store it in the bathroom and use for months with no problem. For a longer shelf life, you can store in the refrigerator.

TIPS: If it won’t whip up enough, try 15 minutes in the freezer then 15 minutes in the mixer and repeat until desired consistency. If it gets too stiff from over whipping, you can soften in the microwave and start over.
